Rapid weight loss diets are all the rage this time of year. They also rise in popularity in January when the post holiday scales are hurting. But do they work?
The truth is that most of these crash diets don't work over the long term and in fact may cause serious damage to your health. By severely restricting your food intake or going on a juice fast for days at a time only causes your body to enter starvation mode. It then starts to store fat and use lean muscle which is exactly the opposite scenario to the one you are trying to create.
Rapid weight loss diets have their place though. They can be very useful in motivating you onto success as the few pounds you initially lose will help you to persevere. They can also kick start your liver and kidneys to become more efficient at getting rid of the toxins in your system. It can speed up your metabolism and help you to burn the calories you do consume faster. Just do not try to stick to this type of plan for more than 24 or 48 hours. The pounds you do lose will be mainly water and if you continue crash dieting, your metabolism will slow down. You won't get the nutrients you need to keep your breath fresh, you will lose muscle tone and you will feel awful.
Alternatively if you only do a fast for 24 hours and then adopt a healthy eating plan you stand every chance of success. If you lose 1 to 2 pounds a week, every week, you will soon a lot slimmer and more toned. You also have a much better chance of keeping these pounds off.
